New 2017-18 Session Now Underway with Swearing-In Day

On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives convened so that the oath of office could be administered to House members. The House is now comprised of 121 Republicans and 81 Democrats, including 23 first-term members.

Also on swearing-in day, the House unanimously selected Rep. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) as speaker of the House for the second consecutive session. The day also included certification of election results, election of the House parliamentarian and adoption of rules that will govern the chamber.

Wayne County Conservation District to Hold Open House

The Wayne Conservation District is holding an open house on Friday, Jan. 13, from 4-7 p.m. in the Park Street Complex, Honesdale. The district is celebrating the opening of its new habitat room, which features a professionally hand-painted mural that showcases native plants and animals in their natural habitats.

The project started in January 2013 as the district began brainstorming how they could display its large collection of animal mounts. Through a joint effort, the plans for an educational habitat room began and by July the project was underway. Two professional artists, Kathy Dodge and Helena Guindon, have spent thousands of hours on the mural that is now complete.

This is a free event and is open to the public. For more information, contact the Wayne Conservation District at 570-253-0930, email kthornton@co.wayne.pa.us or visit wayneconservation.org.
