Brown, Fritz Announce $600,000 Secured for Honesdale Borough Project

May 13, 2026

SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY – Sen. Rosemary Brown (R-40) and Rep. Jonathan Fritz (R-Susquehanna/Wayne) today announced that Honesdale Borough, Wayne County, is set to receive $600,079 to improve pedestrian safety. The money is provided through the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Surface Block Grant Program.

“This investment will improve pedestrian safety and connectivity throughout Honesdale Borough,” said Brown. “These stairways are an important part of the community’s infrastructure, providing access to neighborhoods, schools, businesses and downtown amenities. I’m pleased to see this funding secured to help enhance walkability, accessibility and quality of life in Honesdale.”

For the project, Honesdale Borough plans to remove and reconstruct deteriorated concrete stairways linking Riverside Drive, Cottage Street and Cliff Street. The project will replace unsafe steps with new reinforced concrete stairs and full-length railings, restoring a vital pedestrian connection in the borough's hillside network. These improvements will enhance safety, support walkability, and provide reliable non-motorized access to schools, businesses and community resources.

“Honesdale’s downtown is buzzing with business growth, a multitude of services and recreation opportunities, along with an impressive array of restaurants, breweries and taverns,” Fritz said. “Ensuring that we have maximum means for all residents to enjoy those realities is the goal.”

TASA provides funding for projects and activities defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation, trails that serve a transportation purpose and safe routes to schools.
